NOVEL NON-INVASIVE MEDICAL MONITORING
Measuring Lung Function – A Critical Medical Issue
Lung disease is a global health problem affecting millions of patients and represents one of the largest costs in healthcare. Effective medical management of lung disease requires assessment and monitoring of lung function. This is carried out largely by clinical observation or spirometry (a technology developed in the 1930’s).
Monitoring lung function is a mature market valued at over £7.5 Billion a year.
There are restrictive limitations to the current technology and it fails to satisfy the full span of clinical need. It requires alert and co-operative patients to follow instructions and use apparatus. It is not used on children under 5, critically ill or unconscious patients or the chronically sick elderly (vulnerable patients). These patients often can’t be assessed or monitored fully and leaving assessment to subjective clinical observation. This leaves a subjective element to clinical decisions i.e patient’s transfer from intensive care to less resource-intensive general care wards (and vice versa), resulting in inefficient use of resources and sub optimal clinical management.
The market is ready for the introduction of disruptive technology.
