My Work Today: Eagle Genomics
Our vision
To enable a world where cutting-edge bioinformatics solutions move seamlessly from research to reality.
Our mission
To position ourselves as the leading intermediary between academia and industry for translational bioinformatics.
The market and opportunity
Advances in the management and analysis of genomic data have resulted in the creation of large numbers of databases, algorithms and computational techniques. The resulting products are often distributed free of charge under 'open' licenses. Such products are widely reused by academic institutes, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and agrochemical companies of all sizes. We have identified that these products, often developed within academia, lack commercial grade documentation, support and maintenance. We believe that there is an underserved market for professional services covering documentation, training, customization and integration of opensource bioinformatics software also including support and maintenance. We also believe that, as the commercial potential for genomics-based products becomes established, the market for services in this field will increase.
Our products and services
Our business is modeled along the lines of companies such as RedHat and MySQL who have successfully commercialized open-source software products. We focus on three core areas;
- Bespoke solutions; engagements involving the design and development of solutions to customer's specific data handling and visualization requirements using, where possible, existing open-source components,
- Support and maintenance; installation and integration of existing applications/data within customers' existing IT infrastructure, and providing support and maintenance services under defined service level agreements (SLAs),
- Software appliances; provision of 'turn-key' bioinformatics platforms that focus on ease of installation and use. Our first applicance is a mirror of the Ensembl web site (www.ensembl.org) that is based a VMware virtual machine.
In addition to providing services to customers, we are committed to contributing back, wherever possible, to the open-source corpus.
Our management team
Our core team is composed of 3 experienced bioinformaticians; Abel Ureta-Vidal, Will Spooner and Richard Holland. Together they provide over 20 years experience in project management, software and database development with particular emphasis in bioinformatics data handling and integration. This experience was acquired within academic centres of excellence, including the European Bioinformatics Institute, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Genoscope. Professor Alan Barrell, renowned executive and business angel, joined the team as chairman. We have also built a team of experienced business and scientific advisors.
Our business operations
We operate from our offices at the Babraham Research Campus. Day-to-day work is carried out from Babraham, remotely, or from customer sites. Our current head-count is three, but we are recruiting a further full-time employee. We sub-contract to external parties where appropriate. We retain professional secretarial, legal and accountancy services.
