My Work Today: Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (CfEL)
The Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (CfEL), part of Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge, aims to spread the spirit of enterprise through the creation and delivery of educational activities that inspire and build skills in the practice of entrepreneurship. One of CfEL's key teaching values is that the best people to teach entrepreneurs are entrepreneurs. The Centre collaborates with a network of over 300 experienced entrepreneurs, innovators and other practitioners to provide relevant, credible and practical training.
Alan Barrell has been one of CfEL’s esteemed ‘Entrepreneurs in Residence’ since 2003.
Alan has made an enormous personal contribution through his tireless championing of our programmes and as a mentor to aspiring entrepreneurs. His networking skills, knowledge of creating global businesses and developing business clusters have proved extremely beneficial and inspiring. The energy, charm and expertise he brings to each project is highly valued by CfEL and students alike.

Alan is one of the specially selected members of the Advisory Board for the programme.
Ignite
Ignite is an intensive, annual, one-week training programme for aspiring entrepreneurs and corporate innovators to trial and prepare technology-based business ideas or innovations for the commercial environment in order to increase the chances of success. Alan has supported Ignite through promotion at events, networking and recruiting delegates. He has also been a regular contributor to the programme and supported a number of enterprises. Recently, he became Chairman of Eagle Genomics, a bioinformatics software company, which was founded by Abel Ureta-Vidal, one of the MBA Facilitators of the 2008 Ignite programme. Alan was awarded ‘Ignite Champion’ in 2008 in recognition of his efforts and contribution.
